ULTIMA THULE

MEANING

The term of Ultima Thule came from Ancient Greece, where people believed it was a distant northern island surrounded by mythical sea creatures. Many medieval cartographers and travelers have mentioned the island in their writings, but there is no consensus about its location or even existence.

Later the mystical island Thule was mentioned in Edgar Allan Poe's poem"Dream-Land" (1844):

𝙸 𝚑𝚊𝚟𝚎 𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚌𝚑𝚎𝚍 𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚜𝚎 𝚕𝚊𝚗𝚍𝚜 𝚋𝚞𝚝 𝚗𝚎𝚠𝚕𝚢

𝙵𝚛𝚘𝚖 𝚊𝚗 𝚞𝚕𝚝𝚒𝚖𝚊𝚝𝚎 𝚍𝚒𝚖 𝚃𝚑𝚞𝚕𝚎 –

𝙵𝚛𝚘𝚖 𝚊 𝚠𝚒𝚕𝚍 𝚠𝚎𝚒𝚛𝚍 𝚌𝚕𝚒𝚖𝚎, 𝚝𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚕𝚒𝚎𝚝𝚑, 𝚜𝚞𝚋𝚕𝚒𝚖𝚎,

𝙾𝚞𝚝 𝚘𝚏 𝚂𝚙𝚊𝚌𝚎 – 𝚘𝚞𝚝 𝚘𝚏 𝚃𝚒𝚖𝚎.

Nowadays, this term is used to refer to a distant unknown region, the extreme limit of travel and discovery, because Ultima Thule is a place beyond the borders of the known world.
